Starting an effective business in Nigeria: How I failed and How You can succeed.

business in Nigeria, affiliate marketing, how to start affiliate marketing in Nigeria, work from home

Everybody and their sisters had a business, so I wanted one.

Growing up in a middle-income household, the need to be financially stable and successful was ever so present.  As the least entrepreneurial person in my household, I decided to start a business.  With little to no knowledge, I dived headfirst into the mini-importation business from Onitsha to Warri. Whatever I imported, everything from deodorant to lingerie to jewellery to hair accessories was exciting, my first attempt at starting my own business. The result? A TOTAL LOSS!

 WHY?

Even though it seemed like I was making a profit, people were rushing my products and asking for more. I realised my loss when the cost of importing the goods increased, I used most of my earnings as capital, did not do market research, and assumed that all I needed to start a business was the capital. I ended up trying to cut import costs and source my products myself. Taking a long trip from school to Onitsha market in Anambra state.

This resulted in an overwhelming experience and the realization that I do not have the skills to trade in the local market. I would have been deceived if a friend who knew the area had not accompanied me. I was so disheartened to find that all the efforts I made from transportation to sales only resulted in an actual profit of N15.000, that I invested in a wig for myself and closed "shop".

 THE REALITY

The truth is having one source of income in Nigeria is not sustainable, I always had this at the back of my mind. But the question was how do I find the knowledge to run a business, with my own skills? Sure, you could conclude that business is not for everyone, but honestly, there is a business for everyone. You would probably say “well, just go online there are many resources there”. While that is good, in a world with so much information, finding information tailored to your needs, environment and circumstance can be quite difficult.
