I thought surely her hair had to be that length,

when she didn't put a scissor to her braids,

until she washed and conditioned it to be reused.

I thought surely she'd buy a wig,

when she put a clipper to her hair,

with her receding hairline,

and missing edges.

She combed it ferociously and rocked it every day.

I thought surely she'd burn that weave,

as it stood as stiff as paper mache after every brush,

but she put a scarf on it and made it shine...
