Getting a Scholarship as a Nigerian: What they didn't tell you.

It's scholarship season at Chevening, Commonwealth, and other institutions. Nigeria is on the decline; the truth is that practically everyone wants to go; one method Nigerians do this is through higher education (masters, PhD etc.) If you can't afford to pay for your tuition, you can apply for a scholarship.

• THE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

Every year, over 500 Nigerian Scholarships are available for you to apply for. These scholarships, however, come with a number of drawbacks. First, there are various types of scholarships, ranging from fully funded to partial scholarships, and some are based on the course, such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) courses, which have recently become more popular. Furthermore, some of these scholarships have strict eligibility requirements depending on the degree, age, and even the quota assigned to the nation of origin. For example, in 2020, the South Korean government would provide only four scholarships to Nigerians. Consider how restricted that is. The majority of these scholarships are extremely competitive, leaving the vast majority of applicants stranded and disappointed.

• THE VISA PROCESS 

It appears simple to many people who can partially or fully fund their education: choose a course, find a school, and apply. Others who are unfamiliar with the procedure enlist the help of travel brokers. What's the end result?

Travel agencies, application costs, and, of course, the dreaded IELTS, GRA, and other exams cost a lot of money, only to be rejected. I spent nearly N100,000 on application costs just to be turned down.
